Wilde Thing T-shirt
Queer The Norm have collaborated with London Illustrator and Drag Artist, Ariel Bold (who shares an Irish background and considers themselves the wildest of things), to design our first queer history (queerstory) month commemorative t-shirt; this year honouring the queer story of Oscar Wilde on the 120th anniversary of their death.
Most people know Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and a very gay one at that, but he was also unapologetically living his best life in London. Ever wanted to meet your idol? Well he not only met Walt Whitman, great gay American poet, he did the equivalent of calling him ‘daddy’, got to know him ‘on thee and thou terms’, and they invited a friend to a threesome – or as Wilde later put it, ‘I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips’. And as far as confrontations with your partner’s homophobic relatives go, replying to threat’s of violence from the inventor of the rules of boxing, who’s telling you to stop seeing his son, with ‘I don’t know what the Queensberry rules are, but the Oscar Wilde rule is to shoot on sight.’ is about as good as it gets!
Needless to say it’s no surprise that he is quoted as saying, “conformity is the last refuge of the unimaginative”, as he refused to hide who he was even at times when he probably should have and when accused in court of kissing a boy, he merely replied, ‘oh dear, no. He was… unfortunately ugly’.
Get your ‘Wilde Thing’ on and live your best life with our LGBTQ+ History Month commemorative t-shirt.
